To go agatewards with anyone is to accompany her part of her way home – formerly the last office of hospitality toward a guest. (Possibly from  gate-wards (toward the gate) or gaitwards (to accompany))

To get agate is to make beginning of any work; to be agate is to be on the road, on the way, approaching towards the end.
